Wardrobe Architect Week 9 - Choosing Silhouettes

This week's Wardrobe Architect starts us thinking about our capsule wardrobes.  I've never been able to get interested in capsule wardrobes before as when I have read about it in magazines, it has been about 10 items in neutral colours, all wardrobe basics.  This is really not me.

Since Sarai mentioned that this was the method she was following, I have spent a bit of time reading the Into Mind blog.  (Warning, this is a total rabbit hole if you are interested in this kind of thing!) and I was so glad to find that this is not the method at all.

You decide on the number of days with no repeat outfits so you can have say 3 weeks of outfits planned, and this tells you the size of the wardrobe you should consider.  Sarai is suggesting 20-33 items - this is much more me!

First of all, we have to choose up to 6 of our silhouettes we created in Week 4 for our Spring Summer wardrobes.  Here are my chosen ones:

Full skirted shirt dress with cardigan and pumps

Sleeveless summer dress with cardigan and pumps

Boat neck print dress, long or short sleeved with pumps

Flared or gathered skirt with boat neck tee and boots
I am all about the skirts and dresses!  Since starting to think of my wardrobe and what I feel good in, I have gone from wearing jeans a lot to only wearing them a couple of days a week.  I feel much better about my wardrobe!  I may add a wide-leg trouser option in there too.

The sleeve lengths will vary, and the tights/ boots will be worn in spring but (hopefully) not in summer.

  1. I'm having a surprisingly hard time with this week's assignment-- I think it's the "spring" part that has me hung up, because I've already got two projects in progress, and a third that I really want to get to this time because I've had it bagged up for about 2 years now. So I may honestly skip ahead to do a summer/early fall one instead. I like the silhouettes you've chosen, and it will be interesting to see what pieces come out of it!

    1. i didn't worry too much about the seasonal bit - the shapes i like are the shapes i like, and just the sleeve length and footwear/ legwear changes. have a look at the into mind site and you can start to see what's coming up - i really like the idea! from the above, a lot of emerys and mortmains!

  3. I like your silhouettes, very nice! Like you, I didn't really bother about how seasonal mine were - I wear pretty much the same shapes all year round, although maxi skirts/dresses are more likely to make an appearance in the summer for some reason.

    1. thanks sam. maxi skirts in the summer are so that they don't drag on the ground in the rain (cos of course it never rains in the summer in the UK!)

  4. I've been thinking a lot about what types of clothes I wear and wish I had. I'm discovering that I'm a "uniform" girl. I could wear the same silhouette and/or outfit combination every day if I had enough pieces to mix and match. I'm making a handful of the same skirt pattern right now to give myself a launching off point. I think approaching my sewing this way is going to change the way I choose and wear the things I make.

    1. Uniforms are good in sewing. You can perfect the fit on a few patterns and as we can sew, change up the details so they all look different. A process like this definitely makes sure you will wear what you make. I think it's great!

  5. I hadn't thought about including shoes when I made up my silhouettes...after seeing your's I might go back and add them. I have a hard time with accessories and if I force myself to include them with silhouettes I think I'll be better off!

  7. I am so behind on reading blogs, obviously. I feel like I did a really good job in picking what to send for sewbossy! It looks like it fits the silhouettes as well as colors. Yay!
