Pondering grief and sewing and blogging and probably some other things too

This is one of the top google images for pondering - an awesome pondering baby!

I'm writing this at 4am after having been awake thinking about it for an hour.  Insomniacs unite! It's one of those things I have had half-formed ideas about for a while but never quite felt like putting them down in writing.  I don't know if I will even hit "publish".

This feels like a weird post to write.  Since the sewing category was added to Bloglovin my blog has got quite a number of new followers (welcome - and thank you for following! If you don't blog you may not realise how much that Bloglovin new follower email makes someone's day!) and this seems like an odd post for people to start with.  It's not my usual way and normal sewing-related service will be resumed shortly!

As I have blogged about before, my dad died in November just over a year after his stage 4 cancer diagnosis.  As he lived in the US and I am in the UK, my brother and I had several last minute dashes to hospital to see him.  His death wasn't a surprise - in fact a year of relative health after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is pretty good as these things go.

I'm not sure I have had a typical grief reaction in that I have (and still do) feel a bit numb to the whole thing.  According to Dr Google, this is fairly normal and part of the grief process but it doesn't feel like anyone else is grieving in the same way.  I have a family who need things to carry on relatively as normal and a demanding job (where I was supposed to change teams in January but a recruitment issue has meant I am actually still doing 70% of my previous role, which trying to take on a new one which has been exhausting.  For 6 months).  This week was my dad's birthday on Wednesday and it's Father's Day here on Sunday so it's been a tough one.

And unlike other forms of blogging, blogging about dressmaking is tied up a lot in how we feel about how we look.  Serious comfort eating since my dad's diagnosis has meant I have put back on most of the weight I was so happy and proud to lose.  Isn't it annoying when you find yourself becoming a statistic for diet failure? And who wants to put pictures of themselves up on the internet when they don't feel good about how they look?  This post is partly inspired by thoughtful posts from Jo Sews and Karen from Didyoumakethat about body and style changes and also posts from Jo Sews and Miss Demeanor about mental health.  The sewing blogging community is such a positive place and it seems like it is rare for people to admit that they are finding it hard.  Maybe increasing use of Instagram perpetuates that - I read recently that IG is seems as a much more positive place than Twitter as it is full of pretty, carefully chosen images of a moment in time, whereas Twitter is a bit more ranty.  The difference to my mind is that a thoughtful Twitter conversation is a lot more supportive than a lot of IG likes (although IG likes are lovely too, don't get me wrong). But it's hard to talk about feelings on IG when there's no pretty picture to accompany them.

In the aftermath of all of this, my sewing productivity has suffered.  I have definitely been finding it hard to summon up the effort to sew after a day at work and long commute home.  I only realised recently that this sort of lethargy is part of the grieving process.  I have tried several ways to bust out of this - making quick and easy gratification projects - multiple makes of patterns I have already fitted, knit projects, quick to sew projects, all of which have resulted in some great and really useful wardrobe additions.  I am currently wrangling with trouser fitting which has been a slow process, partly because trouser fitting is hard, and partly as I'm not happy with how I look and so I'm not sure I want to wear the trousers right now.  However I am almost there and pretty proud of the end result!

All of which brings me to blogging.  I have quite a backlog of things to show you, most of which need photos.  I think I will have a big photo taking session with hubby and get as many of them photographed as possible to show you and then I can move onto new makes. I have some great summer dresses planned which I can't wait to sew up and wear, and I haven't felt like that about a project since my winter coat!

Sometimes I think we have to force ourselves to get back to the things we like doing and build back up that habit again. For me that goes for sewing and blogging.  I used to be very good at sewing for a block of time each day (even if that was half an hour - it's amazing how quickly garments come together over several 30 minute sessions) but I haven't been doing that recently.  I thought that one day I would just feel like doing it, but I guess it's kind of a habit that I have fallen out of the way of doing.

As for blogging, I'm not really someone who writes weekly or monthly round ups of what other people are doing/ sewing or shopping links just to have something to post on a particular day.  My favourite blogs post when they have something to say or show, rather than posting on a schedule that it says you should have in some blogging guide or other. That's not really going to change around here - I'm not one of those bloggers like Karen or Gillian who has great ideas of topics that the whole community responds to and ends up writing their own blog posts about.  So I'll get back to showing you my self-made garments and hopefully hearing your thoughts, feedback, ideas and comments on them.

Have you ever experienced a lack of desire to sew or take part in another favourite hobby even though you know you love it?  Any tips for getting back into it you can share?

Pledging for Me Made May

I've been thinking a lot about my pledge for me Made May this year and how I can up my game from last year.  I didn't find it too hard, but I was actually on holiday for part of May, which of course makes photo taking a bit easier (and also the option is there for 2 outfits per day)!

Last year I went for 7 days a week, but a maximum of 2 days a week could be my Anise jacket.

I am giving myself a wildcard each week just in case I need it, but will try not to use them.  If I do I will try to wear thrifted or vintage items.

I am also planning to get through my mending pile - I have a few things which are perfectly wearable apart from a hole in the pocket, broken zip or torn lining, so I am going to mend those, and a thrifted skirt to shorten.

In terms of sewing plans, I am going to carry on with my existing plans, but I am going to try and make some me made knickers.  I have the free So Zo pattern printed and ready to go (to use up knit scraps) and I recently bought the gorgeous Measure Twice Cut Once Jane knickers to use up my leftover wovens!

So this year:

'I, Joanne of Sew Little Time, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '14. I endeavour to wear at least one handmade item each day for the duration of May 2014. I have 4 wildcards which I can use if I have to, but ideally will be vintage or thrifted items. I will also get through my mending/ alterations pile and make some knickers'

You lovely lovely people...

I have been lucky enough to be awarded not one but two Leibster blog awards!  First of all (and shamefully before I went on holiday!) I was awarded it by the lovely Emmie of My Oh Sew Vintage Life - sorry it's taken me so long to accept Emmie!  She is a lovely lady with fab vintage style (check out those victory rolls!).  And more recently by the amazing Rehanon of MissDemeanour.  Rehanon is a Brighton-dwelling ball of sewing, running, creative energy.  If you haven't seen the She Hulk costume she made to run a 10k in recently you are in for a treat!  Thanks so much ladies - it means a lot!

The Leibster award (in case you don't know it by now!) was started to help blogs with less than 200 followers gain more exposure.  So I have to answer 11 questions from my nominator(s!), give you 11 random facts about me and nominate another 11 blogs for the award!  So I thought I'd do both sets in one post and one set of nominations if that's OK!

So Emmie asked:

Whats your most favouritest thing you've ever made?
My Mad Men dress without a doubt. It's the biggest departure from a pattern I've ever done, and with the help of the Sewcialists on twitter, the best fitting dress I've made.  I learnt shedloads from it!

Favourite chocolate?
That's like asking my favourite child (OK it's worse - I only have one child!).  Umm, probably Malteasers, but really any chocolate is good.  Except Hersheys.  The US does not do good chocolate!

If you could be somone for a day, who would you be?
I'd be Liv Tyler, just to know what it's like to be that beautiful!

What super-power would you possess?
Telportation.  I spend far too much time of trains to and from work, so to be able to be there isntantly (and go to Scotland to see my family) would be amazing!

What item of clothing is forever sitting at the bottom of your wash basket?
Anything handwash.  If it can't be chucked in the machine it rarely gets worn.  At the moment an embellished cardie and a thrifted top from LK Bennett.

Favourite Perfume?
Jo Malone Vetyver

If you won the Lottery, what would be the first thing you would do?
Quit my job and buy an overlocker.  That's quite boring isn't it?  Also there would be serious holidays involved.  Hey, how about a sewing holiday for me and my sewcialist buddies?

Favourite Skirt Length?
Just above the knee - classy but not frumpy!

Favourite shoes?
Being 5'9" i usually wear flats and I'm a big trainer fan.  So probably my purple Converse or my sale-bargain Supergas

What is your dream job?
Other than full time sewist?  Something in deisgn - a graphic or interior designer.

What would be your dream day?
Getting up late, sewing in PJs in the morning, lovely lunch out with hubby and daughter, afternoon in Brighton shopping in the Laines (with all that Lottery money I won!), leisurely dinner, then back home for more sewing

Great questions Emmie!

Rehanon asked:

Who would you get to play you in the story of your life?
Hmm, tough one.  I think I'll go for Liv Tyler again.  Feisty and beautiful lady that I have a lot of time for.

Career wise what would your plan B be?
As above, a graphic or interior designer.  Or maybe a chef.

Say you found yourself in a Quantum Leap type role, which enabled to jump to any event in history what would you choose?
I reckon the 1960s and Woodstock would be pretty cool.  Or else Swinging London around the same time!  I love 60s music and fashions.

If you were coming on stage what would you choose as your walk on tune?
Hmm, my favourite song ("Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies) wouldn't really be appropriate here!  How about "Yes" by McAlmont and Butler or "Bluetonic" by the Bluetones?

In Grease what character would you most like to play?
Rizzo.  She has all the best clothes.

What skill would you most like to have?
To be able to sing.  I have a dreadful singing voice and to make matters worse a fairly good ear so I can hear how awful I am!

If you could make any outfit from a movie what would you choose?
Good question!  Probably Rizzo's dance dress from Grease. How cool is this?

Do you have a recipe for something that never disappoints if so can I have it?
Yes - chicken stuffed the goat's cheese and parma ham in red pepper sace.  it's my dinner party failsafe dish.  Recipe here:
http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/511770

Can you recommend a good book you've read?
I read a lot of books as I have a long commute and a Kindle.  Room by Emma Donoghue stayed with me for a long time after, and I loved the Hunger Games trilogy (Suzanne Collins) and the Game of Thrones books.

What's guaranteed to make you laugh?
My daughter and Billy Connolly (probably not at the same time)

If you could choose another name what would you go for?
I've always wanted a different name - Joanne is so boring!  I like Natalie.  No idea why.  My daughter says Poppy.  Also no idea why.

Another great set of questions.  I might have to start plotting how to make the Rizzo dress now!  I knew I should have said Baby's Dirty Dancing finale dress.  That would have been so much easier!

And 11 random facts about me:
- I am originally from the West Coast of Scotland, near Loch Lomond but have lived "down South" for 16 years
- I have never learned to drive (but I plan to!)
- I have lost almost 4 stone in the past couple of years
- I have a small and extremely grumpy tortoiseshell cat called Crumble
- I have a huge weakness for those epic films like Ben Hur and Spartacus - great Sunday afternoon viewing!
- I work in the media side of advertising
- Despite working in advertising I am a Sky Plus addict and so rarely watch any TV ads.  I panic when the box gets to more than 30% full in case I won't be able to record any more stuff (and start deleting hubby's things!)
- My favourite colour is purple
- I sewed through my finger once and didn't notice for a good couple of hours
- I hate hoarding and rarely keep anything I don't need for long - hubby is the opposite and it drives me crazy
- I was brought up Catholic but am very much lapsed now - still have the guilt complex hanging on in there though!

The much belated International Craft Swap Post

Fianlly now that Mad Men challenge and Sewing Meet Up madness is over, I am finally getting around to blogging the Craft Swap goodness.

So Rachel at House of Pinheiro paired up all the participants and I blogged about the fact that my swappee, Mrs M Makes, lives on a few miles away from me, so we decided to meet in person to swap our goodies!

We met in a local coffee shop (despite the fact that neither of us drinks tea or coffee - see, kindred spirits!  I don't know anyone else who doesn't drink tea or coffee) and swapped our gifts over a Diet Coke.

We had to follow a nautical theme/ colour scheme and make something, plus include a small purchased gift.  After reading up about Mrs M, I knew she loved travelling, so I decided to make her a Really Useful travelling washbag.

I used my most useful sized washbag (from a Sanctuary gift set I think) as a template for size, and using mainly stash fabric, buttons and ribbons (as Rachel was hoping for) I replicated the size, lining it with waterproof lining fabric.  The only things I bought for this were the zip and the lining.

As I always find pencils and brushes fall to the bottom of a bag, I added a flap and a pocket with slots of hold these:

For my bought gift, I included a piece of Lush Karma soap.  It smells gorgeous and always makes me think of holidays so hopefully Mrs M will enjoy using it!

I was truly spoilt in return!

The first thing I opened was my bought gift.

Mrs M was in Malta on holiday (see I said she liked travelling!) when the swap was announced and picked this up.  It's an Eye of Osiris, traditionally found on Maltese fishing boats to ward off evil spirits.

See, nautical!  Very clever!

She also made this amazing leather notebook with an anchor button and anchor print paper inside for writing my sewing lists (she knows me well already - I love lists!)

She HAND SEWED this book!

And lastly (told you I was spoilt!) she made me this gorgeous jewellery to tie in with the colour theme:

How lucky am I?

Thanks for lovely presents Mrs M.  Check out her lovely blog Mrs M Makes to see all the other skills she has - she makes stained glass!  She's had a great idea for a Craft Circular, which would be lots of fun to get involved in if you love all kinds of crafting!  And thanks for organising the swap Rachel - you picked a great partner for me and we'll definitely be meeting up again since we are so close by!
