Hemlock Tee

A quick post for a quick make!

This is the Grainline Hemlock tee which is a free pattern that you can download from here.  It's available in one size (Jen's!).

I bought some navy jersey, planning to fill a wardrobe gap (I have one navy tee and lots of things that go with it which I can't wear when it is in the wash, as it is every week).  I was going to make a Renfrew, but totally failed to notice that my jersey had precisely zero stretch in it (why do they make fabric like that?).  I needed something looser fitting to compensate for lack of stretch and Hemlock fit the bill!

I after a little bit of measuring, I cut the pattern as drafted.  I have seen looser fitting versions which work well too!  It went together in about 40 mins on my overlocker, and I twin-needled the cuffs and hem.

I'm not sure this fits into my everyday work style, but I think it could still work tucked in.  But it's certainly a great lounging staple - I do like the dropped shoulder and the wide neckline.

I still need that navy Renfrew tho - must check the stretch of jersey before buying!

  1. Funny you should mention checking stretch in connection with a Renfrew. The only time I made one, I chose the least stretchy jersey ever, and the top was a total flop. Your Hemlock is very cute and because it is comfortable, I bet you reach for it over and over again.

  2. I so need to make this! I don't know why I haven't yet. I like a looser tee tucked in, but it definitely works better with a slim fitting bottom half, and I seem to remember you're not keen on pencil skirts. Maybe tucked into high waisted trousers? Looks great with your jeans in any case.

    1. my bottom plus pencil skirts are not a great combo! i think it's just a slouchier style of weekend tee!

  3. I have this one printed out ready to go, but I compared my measurements against hers, and shrunk it down in adobe pdf before printing out each page. I believe I will probably still have to lengthen the body and sleeves, since they likely will have shrunk down too much. Havn't pieced it together yet to see final size.

  4. I love this! I have yet tried this pattern because of the fit, but I think I want to give it a try. I love all three of your versions, this one, the plaintain and the Renfrew. I have the Renfrew pattern, but have yet tried it. I don't know why I'm waiting so long. I have to try the plaintain too because I've seen several pretty ones out there including yours. :)

You've tried all three, which one do you like best? Where they all relatively easy to construct? I don't have much experience with knits, so I'm curious.

    1. thanks kathy! the renfrew probably fits my style best and it's a slimmer fit. you also have a few neckline and sleeve options. i like the cuffs and hem band as they give a really great RTW finish without breaking out the twin needle. the plantain is more tunicy (although i slimmed it down to be more me) also the neckline is quite scoopy. cute elbow patches too! hemlock is the loosest fitting with a wide neckline and i think it would be great for the fine tissue knits that jen designed it for. definitely a more casual tee with the dropped shoulder.

all fairly easy to construct. i did plantain and hemlock entirely on my overlocker. they probably take an hour each? renfrew maybe slightly longer to do the hem bands and cuffs, but not much.

  5. Love it! I've been meaning to make this for ages, I am in desperate need of some t-shirt type tops. I just need to decide whether to go for this one or Plantain first.

    1. thanks jo! tees are aways so useful (but not as fun as dresses!). i think plantain fits better with my usual style, but this is looser and super comfy!

  6. I SO know what you mean about that one top that goes with like, everything else you own, and the horror when it winds up in the wash LOL. I love navy too, and I really love this tee on you - it's not too loose and not too tight; it's a great fit! :)
